How Kooth is democratising mental health support in Scotland

Kooth provides in-the-moment and preventative mental health support, with no waiting lists.

This online support is critical.

The number of people with mental health conditions has doubled in Scotland over the last decade, with young people being the most affected group, according to data from Scotland's 2022 Census.

Our new data report looking at those seeking support across Scotland between June 2021 and September 2024 shows that:

  • In an average 3 months, young people made 2,600 entries in their online journals, they explored 6,900 discussion boards, and read 1,500 therapeutic articles.

  • Kooth is not just a platform—it’s a lifeline. That’s why 87% of users say they’d recommend it to a friend.

  • 90% found Kooth to be a useful and accessible source of support

  • Over 80% of those engaging in a single one-to-one session with a mental health practitioner reported positive outcomes

  • 86% of users say they feel heard, understood, and respected. And 93% would recommend Kooth’s counselling to others

  • More than 1,000 young people across Scotland log in to Kooth every day, accessing support without the burden of waiting lists.

Scotland’s mental health crisis is growing—but help is here. Kooth, the UK’s leading digital mental health service, supports over 3,000 young Scots every month with no waitlists.

Support in Scotland

Our services are available across Scotland, from the Highlands and Islands to Glasgow City and the Scottish Borders. In addition to being accessible in the Western Isles and Clackmannanshire, our Qwell service is proudly offered in partnership with Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH).

Waiting for support or not finding timely help can lead to escalation and in some cases can lead to an individual needing acute support in hospital. Democratising access to in–the–moment help can be life changing – while not burdening an already overstretched healthcare system.

Kooth: democratising timely mental health support in Scotland

Golden moments from Engagement

John Paul II Primary School, Glasgow

Regularly partnering with this primary school, supporting pupils and parents through annual events, including health & safety workshops and a parents' night stall. Students know their Engagement Lead as the "Kooth Lady," and teachers value Kooth’s mental health resources amidst service cuts.

Collaboration with ManOn!, Inverclyde

Through a partnership with men’s mental health charity ManOn!, Kooth engaged young people at Port Glasgow High School and West College Scotland. This led to a lasting relationship, new video resources for schools, and greater visibility among 14–26-year-olds in the area.

Supporting Families at HMP Barlinnie, Glasgow

Kooth partnered with ‘The Croft’ to support families visiting loved ones in prison, providing anonymous mental health resources. This initiative reduced stigma and offered much-needed support to young people and carers.
