Teen takeover: creating our Mental Health Awareness Week campaign

How Kooth supported young people to create inspiring content for Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

The theme for 2024's mental health awareness week was movement. We set out to work with diverse groups of young people to create content which would spread awareness of the power of movement and also of the support available to young people at Kooth.

We worked with Participation People, an inspiring organisation which believes organisations become more effective when they collaborate creatively with young people. Participation People recruited a team of young journalists on our behalf, who were given a brief: to create impactful and helpful content suitable for young people on the theme of mental health and movement.

While they were busy creating a series of #KoothMoves videos and social media graphics, we reached out to a school in Buckingham where students were keen to share their experiences of moving for their mental health.

We filmed young people explaining how they liked to dance, swim and play football or basketball to feel more motivated.

We also made five narrated videos of young people being active, talking about why they found it helpful. One walked their dog, one boxed, one climbed a tree, while another danced in her bedroom.

We complemented this content with other resources, including a podcast on disability and football and articles on adding movement to your day and on the barriers to being active.

Working with young people to spread awareness of mental health and of Kooth means we’re closer to the audiences we’re trying to reach - and living our values by being alongside children and young people.

Their lived experiences are authentically expressed, helpful to others and are appreciated not only by our service user community but also by thousands of others on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other social channels.

The data is undeniable.

That we're in the midst of a global mental health crisis, with demand growing double digits every year and healthcare systems unable to keep up in the UK, mental health is one of the fastest growing areas of cost and concern.

It represents 9% of total NHS budgets, yet 82% of NHS trusts feel unable to keep up with current demand. Given those circumstances, systems have to focus on those with the highest level of need, leaving other individuals sitting on waiting lists potentially for years.

So the question becomes how are we going to break out of this? Well, Kooth over the last two decades has really focused on something we all know in healthcare, which is that prevention is better than cure. So our purpose is to help create mentally healthier populations, leaving no one behind.

And we do that by providing support from that first moment of need. In accessing Kooth, you can choose what kind of support you need without need for a referral, and with one click, access professional support without any waiting lists, thresholds or limits.

In doing that, we can not only provide support to individuals, we can help turn the tide on this growing crisis and importantly, have a huge economic impact in doing so.
