Suicide prevention: the critical role of early support

How Kooth supported young people to create inspiring content for Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

The theme for 2024's mental health awareness week was movement. We set out to work with diverse groups of young people to create content which would spread awareness of the power of movement and also of the support available to young people at Kooth.

We worked with Participation People, an inspiring organisation which believes organisations become more effective when they collaborate creatively with young people. Participation People recruited a team of young journalists on our behalf, who were given a brief: to create impactful and helpful content suitable for young people on the theme of mental health and movement.

While they were busy creating a series of #KoothMoves videos and social media graphics, we reached out to a school in Buckingham where students were keen to share their experiences of moving for their mental health.

We filmed young people explaining how they liked to dance, swim and play football or basketball to feel more motivated.

We also made five narrated videos of young people being active, talking about why they found it helpful. One walked their dog, one boxed, one climbed a tree, while another danced in her bedroom.

We complemented this content with other resources, including a podcast on disability and football and articles on adding movement to your day and on the barriers to being active.

Working with young people to spread awareness of mental health and of Kooth means we’re closer to the audiences we’re trying to reach - and living our values by being alongside children and young people.

Their lived experiences are authentically expressed, helpful to others and are appreciated not only by our service user community but also by thousands of others on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other social channels.
